A FUN NIGHT OF GREAT FOOD & COOL JAZZ

Thursday, 27 May 2010 16:35 by dan

On Thursday, June 10, CCGP hosted an "Evening of Great Food & Cool Jazz" featuring the Chaille Percival Quartet at Kay n' Dave's Cantina.  Community members enjoyed a few hours of great entertainment, while supporting a great cause:  Culver City's Parks and Playgrounds.  We raised a few hundred dollars toward our ongoing mission to improve the beauty and function of Culver City's parks.... and had some great food & cool jazz!

MAKING A DIFFERENCE AT VETERAN'S PARK

Friday, 4 December 2009 16:22 by dan

KaBOOM!

Only adults could participate at Build Day (because of City liability issues), but much of our efforts in Veterans' Park were for kids... and moms... and dads... and, well, everyone.  Around 200 community members, city staff & employees of the Wasserman Media Group pitched in and got dirty.  During an amazing day, a playground was built, hundreds of square feet of garden was planted, picnic tables were refurbished and repainted, cubby holes were built for the teen center, a permanent bicycle rack was installed, the softball backstops were painted, and a mural was painted!  Wow, did I say it was a busy day?
Thanks to the folks at KaBOOM! and the Wasserman Foundation, Culver City was given a grant to do a lot of much needed work to its busiest park.  What a perfect example of the private sector, a city, and its residents collaborating to fulfill a dream.  Culver City Great Parks Association played a vital role in participating in the grant request process, recruiting community members to participate, and ultimately getting our hands dirty - AND REVELING IN IT!
The playground will open for jumping, climbing, sliding, dangling and just plain having fun by Monday, December 7.  Thanks to Culver City Great Parks member, Holly Port, for the amazing pictures.  Enjoy!

FOX HILLS PARK

URBAN TRAILBLAZING

Sorry, Fox Hills Neighborhood, the secret is out.  Nestled amongst the condos and businesses of Fox Hills is an urban oasis.  I just checked it out and was amazed.  Tennis courts, paddle tennis courts, softball, picnic areas, and a .47 mile nature trail!  My only question is, why couldn't they find another three one hundredths of a mile to round it off to an even half mile?

Last weekend the Fox Hills Neighborhood Association (FHNA ) held a Park Pride Day where they created a beautiful corner landscaped planting, painted handrails and painted picnic tables and benches.  The FHNA project was also generously supported by some great community partners; The Westfield Corporation, The Home Depot, Symantec and the City of Culver City PEP Grant projects.

CULVER CITY SKATE PARK IS OPEN!

Tuesday, 13 October 2009 03:48 by dan

Construction of the new tubular fence is complete.  The city has re-opened the park weekdays, noon till sunset and weekends, 9:30 - 4:30.  There were some finishing touches being done, but as far as skaters are concerned it's open for business!

The Culver City Skatepark will some day be dedicated to the memory of Parks & Recreation Commissioner Anita Shapiro.  Ms Shapiro came to council meeting after council meeting to urge our elected officials to "do something for these kids" and "these kids are working to earn their skatepark."  To "her kids," Anita told them to be patient, be like the good citizens that you are and be working for your skatepark.  Anita's constant efforts at City Council eventually got "her kids" the old temporary stakepark.

In July 2001 the City Council, in recognition for her years of community work "for these kids," appointed Ms Shapiro to the Culver City Parks & Recreation Commission.  That was when she went right to work for finding the grant moneys to build the permanent stakepark.

HOW'S THE VIEW FOR YOU?

Tuesday, 15 September 2009 19:27 by dan

If you haven't had the opportunity to check out the vistas from the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook, you're starving your eyes.

Survive the 200-some steps climbing the face of Baldwin Hills off Jefferson Blvd., and you won't regret the reward.  And Culver City residents may be able to walk contiguously from Culver City Park to the beautiful and educational Balwin Hills Scenic Overlook.  The City Council gave approval to the MRCA (Mountain Recreation Conservation Authority) to work with City staff to install a trail through Culver City Park to the overlook.

Climb If You Dare!

SKATE PARK

Tuesday, 11 August 2009 17:09 by dan

Why was the skate park closed?

It was closed for the construction of a new tubular steel fence that will have a longer life than the chain link fence that was originally installed.

Why did the construction happening during some of the summer vacation instead of after school is back in session?

There was a desire to make the skate park safer and more secure as soon as possible.

Is there a reason why the skate park opens in the middle of the day instead of in the morning and closes in the mid-afternoon on weekends?

The reason for these opening and closing times is that they are coordinated with the schedule of Culver City's Parks and Playgrounds staff that can be there to oversee the park.

DOGS IN THE PARKS

Tuesday, 11 August 2009 17:06 by dan

I sometimes see people walking their dog in the park.  Is this OK?

Dogs are not allowed in Culver City Parks unless they are one of the two “Pooch Paths,” or Culver City's Dog Park, known as the "Bone Yard".  Otherwise, one can be given a citation for walking their dog(s) in a park.  The citation fee for this infraction is: First Offense, $100; Second Offense, $200; Third and Subsequent Offenses (within the same year), $500.

I have heard that there are “Pooch Paths” in some Culver City Parks.  Can you tell me where they are and what they are used for?

There are only two “Pooch Paths” at this time.  There is one that passes through Culver West Alexander Park from McConnell St to Moore St.  The other “Pooch Path” is located in Culver City Park and goes from Jefferson Blvd. to the Bone Yard (dog park) and to the restrooms at the picnic shelter. This ‘path’ is meant to be a means for dog walkers to walk through a portion of the park in order to get to the Bone Yard.
