Construction of the new tubular fence is complete. The city has re-opened the park weekdays, noon till sunset and weekends, 9:30 - 4:30. There were some finishing touches being done, but as far as skaters are concerned it's open for business!
The Culver City Skatepark will some day be dedicated to the memory of Parks & Recreation Commissioner Anita Shapiro. Ms Shapiro came to council meeting after council meeting to urge our elected officials to "do something for these kids" and "these kids are working to earn their skatepark." To "her kids," Anita told them to be patient, be like the good citizens that you are and be working for your skatepark. Anita's constant efforts at City Council eventually got "her kids" the old temporary stakepark.
In July 2001 the City Council, in recognition for her years of community work "for these kids," appointed Ms Shapiro to the Culver City Parks & Recreation Commission. That was when she went right to work for finding the grant moneys to build the permanent stakepark.
